About the London Palladium
The London Palladium is one of the most famous London West End Theatres. Located on Argyll Street, the venue is full of theatre history and is a showcase of beautiful period architecture.
Built in 1910 by Walter Gibbons as competition to Sir Edward Moss’ London Hippodrome and Sir Oswald Stoll’s London Coliseum, the theatre has seen many famous production staged here and has hosted the Royal Variety Performance a record of 40 times. The venue began its existence with the staging of a variety of performances including many pantomimes. During the pre WW2 era, the Palladium hosted plenty of both British and American theatre and its manager George Black worked hard on exceeding the full potential of the venue until his death in 1945.
Following Black’s death, Val Parnell took over as the managing director of the venue and adopted a new policy of presenting big name American acts. Stars such as Liza Minelli, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra performed at the venue. Many artists have recorded their music here including Johnny Cash and Marvin Gaye.
In most recent years the London Palladium hosted events such as the British Academy Television Awards. Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian’s production of The Sound of Music, Sister Act the Musical and Sir Elton John performed here in 2013. The Theatre is owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group and has a capacity of 2,286 spread over three levels. The London Palladium was Grade II listed by English Heritage in 1960.
