39 Steps description

How can you resist seeing four actors play 139 roles at such a fast pace it leaves you breathless? This is comedy at its best, a play adapted from the classic thriller novel and film known and loved by millions. Watch your step!

Scottish author John Buchan would be delighted with the on-going popularity of his 1915 novel. The 39 Steps was originally released in serial form in Blackwood's Magazine before being published by William Blackwood and Sons in book form later that year.

The first of five novels starring the adventurous hero Richard Hannay. Alfred Hitchcock committed the story to film in 1935. Now Buchan’s timeless adventure has been adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, inspired by an original concept dreamed up by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon.

This latest production features direction by Nicola Samer. Richard Hannay is played by The Crown and Bridgerton star Tom Byrne who races through a series of adventures, encounters killers, meets secret agents and seduces beautiful women en-route to proving his innocence. Safeena Ladha plays Annabella Schmidt, Pamela and Margaret. Eugene McCoy plays Clown 1 and Maddie Rice is Clown 2. The Understudies are Jacob Daniels and Hannah Parker.

The creative team includes set designer Peter McKintosh, lighting designer Ian Scott, sound designer Mic Pool and director of movement Toby Sedgwick. The Casting is by Abby Galvin.

39 Steps – the story

The hero, Richard Hannay, encounters a mysterious woman who leads him on a country-wide adventure which sees him desperate to clear his name and save his King and country, with Scotland Yard’s crack team of policemen and detectives in hot pursuit.

This amazing stage production includes the famous chase on the Flying Scotsman train, the well-loved scene on the Forth Bridge, the world’s first ever on-stage plane crash and the edge-of-your-seat drama of the death defying finale.

Renowned as an ‘astonishing theatrical tour de force’, it’s a visual and emotional feast of drama, villainy, adventure and pure silliness, guaranteed to raise a constant stream of giggles and belly laughs. Audiences absolutely love it, and it’s no surprise this was once the West End’s longest-running comedy.

If you’re keen to experience the thrills, chills, spills and laughter of London’s longest running stage comedy, we’re your first stop.
