Aladdin Pantomime description
Having thrilled audiences with their version of Jack and the Beanstalk in 2022, now the award-winning writer Sonia Jalaly and director Nicholai La Barrie are back with Aladdin. A fresh new version of the classic tale from The Thousand and One Nights, this is panto at its finest.
So why is this going to be such a great festive panto?
It’s a story everyone knows and loves. It’s billed as being crammed with chart-topping songs, comedy, and the kind of quirky twists the writer, director and venue are famous for. The scenery, costumes, music, and effects are going to be spectacular, as you’d expect from a Lyric Hammersmith panto. And it’s a family show with something for everyone, perfect for Christmas.
Aladdin has been performed, read and enjoyed in so many ways over the centuries, and one of the best-loved of all is Aladdin the pantomime. In this version, you’ll fly above the streets of Hammersmith with the production’s legendary heroes Aladdin and Jasmine.
An ancient folk tale with a Lyric Hammersmith twist
Aladdin is the Lyric’s 2024 panto but the story is very old indeed. It’s a well-known tale from The Thousand and One Nights, an Arabic language collection of folk tales rolled into a book by various people across Asia, North Africa, Persia and Mesopotamia. The first English language version was published in the early 1700s, Disney’s 1992 animated Disney movie inspired millions, and it has become a classic in the world of pantomime.
Following their brilliant panto Jack and the Beanstalk in 2022, which received critical acclaim, the award-winning writer Sonia Jalaly and director Nicholai La Barrie have combined their talents once more to bring Aladdin back to London. The venue is perfect for pantomime, the place where some of the best panto on earth finds a home.
Meet Sonia Jalay and Nicholai La Barrie
Sonia Jalaly is a writer and theatre maker from Manchester whose work has appeared at Kiln Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Company Three, Paines Plough and Hull Truck. As a member of the BBC Writersroom Comedy Room, she writes regularly for CBBC and CBeebies.
Nicholai La Barrie is a respected Theatre director, film director and MOBO Fellow. His work on Tina - The Tina Turner Musical, Statements After An Arrest Under The Immorality Act, Liar Heretic Thief at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and many more have sealed his reputation.
The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is special, too. It’s a place where every show is ambitious, entertaining, and inspiring. It breaks down barriers to introduce young people to their own creativity, and works hard to help shape a bright future for British theatre.
Put all this together and what do you get? ‘Amazing’!
