Barcelona description
British-American screen star Lily Collins (Emily in Paris, To The Bone, Mank) and Spanish actor Álvaro Morte (Money Heist, Wheel of Time, Immaculate) both make their West End stage debuts in this acclaimed two-handed play at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Expect a thrilling emotional rollercoaster ride!
The action is written by the American playwright and screenwriter Bess Wohl (Camp Siegfried, Grand Horizons) and the play runs for just 12 weeks. Wohl is an award-winning American playwright and filmmaker, whose plays have been produced on and off Broadway, right across the US and internationally. Her play Camp Siegfried world premiered at The Old Vic in 2021, directed by Katy Rudd, starring Patsy Ferran and Luke Thallon. She has also written Grand Horizons, Make Believe, Small Mouth Sounds, American Hero, and the musical Pretty Filthy.
When an innocent bit of fun turns dangerous
Barcelona enjoyed a world premiere way back in 2013 at the People’s Light and Theatre Company in Pennsylvania. The US West Coast premiere in 2016 took place at Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse. Now it’s in London for the first time.
Directed by Lynette Linton (Shifters, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Sweat), the play is set in the Spanish city of Barcelona, where an American woman’s hen weekend changes direction dramatically when she decides to enjoy a one-night stand with a handsome Spaniard. It’s an innocent enough beginning born of fun and adventure, but things soon get weird. By turns funny and dangerous, Irene’s pretty romantic fantasy quickly transforms itself into a complicated, dangerous game of cat and mouse.
As one critic said, this “wily two-character drama” never fulfils your expectations. Instead it pulls you along, staying one step ahead of you as it holds out for a “deeper truth.”
A glittering cast and creative team
Lily Collins played Fantine in the BBC miniseries Les Misérables from 2018–2019 and marketing executive Emily Cooper in the Netflix comedy Emily in Paris, for which she received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. Alvaro Morte is a respected Spanish actor best known for playing The Professor in the TV series Money Heist. He also plays Logain Ablar in Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time.
The Set and Costume design is by Frankie Bradshaw, Lighting by Jai Morjaria, Composition and Sound Design by Duramaney Kamara and Xana, and the Video Design by Gino Ricardo Green. The Wigs, Hair and Makeup Design come from Cynthia De La Rosa, the UK casting by Heather Basten and the US Casting by Jim Carnahan.
The Movement Direction and Intimacy comes from Shelley Maxwell, with Vocal Coaching by Hazel Holder and Dramatherapy by Wabriya King. And the show is produced by ATG Productions, Bad Robot Live and Gavin Kalin Productions.
