Fiddler on the Roof description
One of four dazzling productions in Regent’s Park this summer, Fiddler on the Roof is an enchanting musical that whisks us back to a simpler time and place. The 1971 movie was a smash and we expect this vibrant open air musical version to be just as popular.
This time around the show’s directed by Jordan Fein (Oklahoma, Young Vic), featuring all the wonderful tunes that have worked their way into the national consciousness: If I Were A Rich Man, Tradition, Matchmaker, Sunrise, Sunset and more. The result is a joyful experience about accepting change, standing up for yourself, and the power of community. Add the dancing and music and it is quite simply exuberant.
It’s also a genuine classic. Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International, the musical is based on the Sholem Aleichem Stories by special permission of Arnold Perl. The Book is by Joseph Stein with music from Jerry Bock and lyrics from Sheldon Harnick.
There’s a talented team on board for the show. Mark Aspinall is the Musical Supervisor and Julia Cheng is the Choreographer, Jordan Fein is the Director and Hannah Hauer-King is the Associate Director. James Hassett is the Season Associate Sound Designer. Tom Scutt is the Designer, with Nick Lidster responsible for Sound Design, Aideen Malone for Lighting Design and Dan Turek for Musical Direction. Stuart Burt CDG is the Casting Director.
The Fiddler on the Roof story
The year is 1905 and the backdrop is a tiny village where Tevye, a Jewish milkman, likes things just the way they are. He thinks his five daughters are ready for marriage and sets about finding husbands for them. But they refuse to be swayed by their dad’s traditions and one by one they challenge his beliefs. Does Tevye manage to marry his daughters off or will they have the last word?
The music, lights, costumes, atmosphere and story will have you captivated, as will the beautiful natural setting. Prepare for an exceptional outdoor theatre experience.
