Guys and Dolls description
Sir Nicholas Hytner directs a wonderful new production of this much-loved Broadway classic in the round, with the venue’s seating wrapped around the action so it feels like you’re actually there. You’ll be transported to the dazzling streets of Manhattan and the smoky bars of Havana for this unusually compelling love story.
A sizzling tale of gambling, gangsters, nightclubs and unlikely love
This is a sizzling story set in New York City, a powerful tale involving gamblers, gangsters and nightclub singers. Based on characters created by the writer Damon Runyon it weaves the story of a pair of guys and dolls as they party in the nightclubs and gamble at the crap tables of Manhattan, where a highly unlikely love story unfolds.
Even if you’ve never seen the musical before you’ll probably recognise the tunes, which have worked their way into the world’s consciousness over the years since the original Broadway premiere back in 1950. Expect a collection of Broadway’s greatest ever show-stopping songs including the legendary Luck be a Lady, Adelaide’s Lament, and Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.
Legendary director, cast and creatives
Sir Nicholas Hytner directs, respected the world over for his theatre direction, film direction and film production work and role as Artistic Director of London's National Theatre. His stage directorship hits include Miss Saigon, The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors and his movie credits include The Madness of King George, The Crucible, The History Boys, and The Lady in the Van.
The cast is impressive too, rich in top West End talent. Owain Arthur (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) plays Nathan Detroit, George Ioannides (An Officer and a Gentleman) is Sky Masterson, Celinde Schoenmaker (Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera) is Sarah Brown, Timmika Ramsay (Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Adult Material) plays Miss Adelaide and Jonathan Andrew Hume (Come From Away, The Lion King) is Nicely-Nicely Johnson.
The Choreographer is Arlene Phillips with James Cousins, the Musical Supervisor and Arranger is Tom Brady, the Set Designer Bunny Christie, Costume Designer Deborah Andrews, Lighting Designer Paule Constable, Sound Designer Paul Arditti, and the Orchestrator is Charlie Rosen.
The Bridge Theatre, near Tower Bridge, opened in 2017, developed by Hytner and Nick Starr at a reported cost of £12 million and home to their London Theatre Company, founded after their time as executive director and artistic director at the National Theatre.
The result of all this brilliance? This is a genuinely unmissable feel-good musical.
