Lyonesse description

About Lyonesse

We have great quality cheap tickets for Lyonesse on sale, and it’s a play to remember. According to ancient Arthurian legend, Lyonesse was a kingdom stretching from Land's End to the Isles of Scilly, far out in the Celtic Sea. The mysterious kingdom was swallowed up by the sea overnight and has been lost ever since.

Lyonesse is also a remarkable new from Penelope Skinner, directed by Ian Rickson and taking to the stage at the Harold Pinter theatre from October 17th to December 23rd 2023. Prepare for a classy piece of storytelling from the pen of the playwright who gave us The Village Bike and Fresh Meat, Angry Alan, Meek, Linda, The Ruins of Civilisation, Fred’s Diner, Eigengrau and F***ed. This is a powerful story for our times, and it’s on stage for a strictly limited season

What's the story of Lyonesse?

Lyonesse tells the tale of Elaine, portrayed by Scott Thomas, a reclusive actor who remerges after an absence of thirty years. No one knows why Elaine disappeared. While she was always known for avoiding the glare of publicity, three decades is an extremely long time to disappear. Finally ready to share what happened to her, she invites young film executive Kate, played by James, to her Cornish home.

Once the women get together at Elaine’s remote house to plan the actor’s comeback, questions are raised. This is Elaine’s story, but who actually controls it? Is it the person who tells the story, or the people who hear it?

As Skinner says, “I was inspired to write Lyonesse after wondering what would happen if the dramatic action of a traditional revenge tragedy was flipped, so that the story instead became about the person upon whom revenge had been sworn.”

Who is starring in Lyonesse?

Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James will star together in Lyonesse.

Who is on the Lyonesse creative team?

Lyonesse is designed by Georgia Lowe, who delighted audiences with her work on 2022’s Henry VIII at The Globe, Anna Karenina at the Crucible, and The Trials at the Donmar Warehouse. There’s lighting by Jessica Hung Han Yun, whose work on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s My Neighbour Totoro scored a hit. The music is by the Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck, and the sound is by Tingying Dong.
