Matilda The Musical description
About Matilda The Musical
Meet Matilda, our heroine. Matilda's parents are horrid. In fact every grown up in her world is dreadful. Combining a script by the Bafta nominated Dennis Kelly and madly funny words and music by the popular Aussie funny-man and creative genius Tim Minchin, this is one heck of a children's musical. The set is remarkable, there's oodles of brilliant stage magic to enjoy and grown-ups, awful as they are, tend to enjoy the fun just as much as their kids!
What's the story of Matilda The Musical?
Grown ups really are absolutely appalling creatures... or they are in Matilda's world. Written in 1988, this splendid story by Roald Dahl tells the hilarious story of young Matilda, a clever child who is ignored by her neglectful parents. Matilda’s mum can't think of anything except her obsession with ballroom dancing and her dad disapproves of Matilda's book reading, sure it will make verrucas grown on her soul. The headmistress of Matilda’s school is even worse, keen to imprison as many children as possible. Luckily Matilda realises she has a very special power – her magical telekinesis will keep her safe.
Who is on the Matilda The Musical creative team?
Rob Howell is the designer and the choreography comes from Peter Darling. Hugh Vanstone is responsible for the amazing lighting and Christopher Nightingale supervises and orchestrates the music. Simon Bake does the sound and Paul Kieve, of Ghost The Musical fame, has created some incredible magical illusions.
The set is extraordinary and the director Matthew Warchus, who also directed The Lord of the Rings, has created a piece of entertainment that appeals to every age.
What are people saying about Matilda The Musical?
- Time Out - “Tim Minchin's wickedly good story of a schoolgirl genius is still irresistible.”
- The Guardian - “Writer Dennis Kelly and composer and lyricist Tim Minchin go to the top of the class with this anarchically joyous, gleefully nasty and ingenious musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's story.”
- The Express - “Minchin's lyrics and melodies are glorious. Cutting and merciless one moment, they become tender and exquisite the next. Intelligent and emotional, may this show never grow up. May Matilda remain revolting forever. ”
