MJ the Musical description
About MJ
The Producers Lia Vollack Productions and The Michael Jackson Estate have announced something very cool. The multiple Tony Award winning Broadway musical MJ will open in London’s West End, playing at the Prince Edward Theatre from March 2024. As you can imagine the excitement is already mounting for a second Jackson musical, this time revealing the background to the artist’s extraordinary Dangerous World Tour in 1992. MJ theatre tickets are due to be hot property for Jackson fans. If that’s you, prepare yourself for the show of a lifetime.
What's the story of MJ?
As the book writer for MJ, Lynn Nottage said, “As a Black musician and a pioneering voice in the music industry, Michael Jackson demanded inclusion, broke incredible barriers and in the process made indelible music that continues to resonate, delight and move listeners today. I am drawn to his complicated, singular and uncompromising creative process, and to understand where, why and how he made his music."
MJ cleverly shows us the thrilling background to Jackson’s amazing Dangerous World Tour in 1992, an event that hurled him into the spotlight, where he remained for the rest of his life. The production goes way beyond the legendary dance moves , the signature voice and the compelling vibe, showing us a glimpse of the artist’s creative mind and the collaborative spirit that made him so famous.
Who is starring in MJ?
The cast for MJ will be announced nearer the time.
Who is on the MJ creative team?
MJ will be directed and choreographed by the Royal Ballet Associate Artist Christopher Wheeldon OBE. This is what he said about the show: "I am thrilled that MJ will come to London, having been embraced by New York audiences since it opened. Michael Jackson had a profound influence on popular culture, as well as all of us as performing artists, and this musical is an exploration of that artistic mind and a creative process which is unmistakably Michael Jackson. It has offered us the opportunity to put one of the greatest catalogues of pop music ever written up onstage in a show that combines the thrill and energy of a Michael Jackson concert with a glimpse into a pivotal moment of his pioneering career. After many years working with the Royal Ballet and bringing the Tony Award winning American In Paris to the West End, I now very much look forward to bringing MJ to UK audiences."
Christopher Wheeldon won a Tony Award for Best Choreography of a Musical for MJ, already an award winner for his work on An American in Paris. He’s joined by an excellent creative team studded with fellow award winners and nominees.
The Costume Design comes from the Tony and Emmy winner, Paul Tazewell, who worked on Hamilton. The Sound Design is by the Tony and Olivier winning Gareth Owen, responsible for sound on Come From Away. And Scenic Design is by the Tony Award and two Emmy Award winning Derek McLane, who also worked on Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Projection Design comes from the two Tony nominee Peter Nigrini of Dear Evan Hansen fame, and the Hair and Wig Designer is another winner, this time the two-time Emmy nominee Charles LaPointe whose awesome work on The Color Purple made history. The Lighting Design is by the six Tony Award winner Natasha Katz, who also worked on Once. Musical Supervision comes from the Tony nominee David Holcenberg, who delighted us with his work on Matilda.
Last but not least Orchestrations and Arrangements are by David Holcenberg and another Tony winner, Jason Michael Webb, who scored a hit with his work on The Color Purple. We’ll be selling theatre tickets for MJ, so come back for yours and prepare for loads of dazzling Jackson magic.
