Oedipus (Old Vic) description

About Oedipus at the Old Vic

It’s Oedipus, a classic tale dating back thousands of years which never gets old or stale. This is the Old Vic’s fresh production of Sophocles’ ancient Greek tragedy adapted by Ella Hickson. The show is due at the West End’s Old Vic from January 21st to March 29th 2025 and there’s a pair of extraordinary actors at the helm. Join Rami Malek and Indira Varma for this widely-anticipated Old Vic production in association with Hofesh Shechter Company.

What's the story of Oedipus at the Old Vic?

Matthew Warchus, co-director, explains the plot perfectly. As he says, "Sophocles’ play, arguably the best-plotted tale ever told, is the original detective story. 2,450 years since it was written, we still find ourselves captivated by the intractable questions at the core of its drama: of the sometimes destructive outcomes in our quest for knowledge; how much we’re in control of our fate, or if we’re mostly living out a pre-written script that we’re completely powerless to change.

"I’m so excited to be co-directing this extraordinary play, in a dazzling new version by Ella Hickson, alongside the phenomenal choreographer Hofesh Shechter. And I am thrilled to announce the brilliant Rami Malek and Indira Varma in the lead roles."

Who is starring in Oedipus at the Old Vic?

The best theatre tickets for Oedipus at the Old Vic let you revel in Rami Malek’s UK stage debut. There’s no doubt at all that his performance will be epic, having thrilled us as Freddie Mercury in a movie role and delighted us as Mr Robot on TV, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His lead role in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody snagged Malek the Academy Award for Best Actor and, in 2019, Time magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people.

Indira Anne Varma comes with equally impressive acting credentials including a movie debut and first major role in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. TV’s The Canterbury Tales, Torchwood, Rome, Luther, Human Target, and Paranoid, and a role in Game of Thrones have added to her reputation, as an already well-rounded and thoroughly impressive talent.
