What's the story of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends?
The idea for this concert arrived during the pandemic, when Sondheim himself proposed a follow-up of their revue productions Side by Side by Sondheim and Putting It Together. Sondheim died, aged 91, during the concert’s development, and a passionate one night only performance took place on 3rd May 2022 at the Sondheim Theatre. It sold out immediately.
Staged by Matthew Bourne and Maria Friedman and supported by a 26-piece orchestra conducted by Alfonso Casado Trigo, it was shown simultaneously on-screen at the Prince Edward Theatre, then broadcast on BBC2 TV on the last day of 2022.
On 12th February 2023, the concert won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Theatre Event. At the awards show Cameron Mackintosh announced that the concert would be back, this time at the Gielgud Theatre, for a 16 week run. This is your chance to see the magic for yourself.
