People, Places and Things description
An Olivier-winning drama with an Olivier-winner of an actor in the lead role. An exceptional director, a playwright to reckon with, and a set that puts you right at the heart of the action. This not-to-be-missed production returns to the West End to thrill us all over again.
Are you ready to enter the emotional rollercoaster of addiction, detox, therapy and recovery? You’ll join Emma, a talented actress whose on-stage breakdown sends her into rehab. While the physical side of addiction to drugs and booze is one thing, the emotional side of recovery is something different altogether and Emma struggles to open up. Will she accept herself and stay sober?
A powerful Olivier-winning drama
This smash hit play weaves the compelling story of one woman's battle against addiction. It stars Denise Gough, who reprises her Olivier-winning lead role. It’s directed by Jeremy Herrin, who directed the original 2015 National Theatre production. The play comes from the British playwright Duncan Macmillan who gave us Lungs, Every Brilliant Thing, Don Juan Comes back From the War and more. Every signpost points to ‘excellent’.
After a run at the National it transferred to Wyndham's Theatre in 2016, nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Play and Denise Gough winning the Olivier for Best Actress. Six Drama Desk Awards, a WhatsOnStage Award and a Critic’s Circle Award later it retains drama at its finest, an experience to treasure for anyone who likes their drama powerful and impactful. No wonder Gough’s performance has been called ‘titanic’.
The Olivier for this show isn’t her only Olivier. Gough has also been nominated for Tony awards and nominated for a British Academy Television Award. Her TV roles include Paula, Too Close or Andor, and she has appeared in the films Colette, The Other Lamb, Monday, and Martyrs Lane.
Serious theatre talent in the driving seat
Jeremy Herrin has directed smash hit West End productions including Alan Ayckbourn's Absent Friends, the UK premiere of David Hare's The Vertical Hour, and the world premiere and West End transfer of Hare's South Downs.
The creative team includes another potent force, Bunny Christie, whose innovative set design and on-stage seating draws audiences in to feel the emotion even more vividly. Costume designer Christina Cunningham, lighting designer James Farncombe, composer Matthew Herbert, sound designer Tom Gibbons, video designer Andrzej Goulding, movement director Polly Bennett, and casting director Jessica Ronane complete the team, with original casting by Wendy Spon.
