During 1671, Blood, disguised as a parson, visited the Crown Jewels. One morning shortly afterwards , again disguised as Parson Blood, he arrived early in the morning with three other men. When the Keeper of the Jewels Mr Edwards led Blood downstairs to the room where the jewels were kept, Blood knocked him out with a hammer then ran him through with a sword. He took out the crown, orb and sceptre and flattened the crown with his hammer. Because the sceptre was too long to go into the bag, Blood's brother-in-law tried to saw it in half.
Mr Edwards regained consciousness and began to shout. The criminals dropped the sceptre and ran off but Blood was arrested at the Iron Gate after trying to shoot the guards. Once in custody Blood refused to answer any questions unless they were asked by the King. Having charmed the King, Blood was not just freed, he was awarded Irish land worth £500 a year - probably because of his sheer cheek.
