The Duchess description
You loved her in the BBC's Time and Channel 4's Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer. Now the Doctor Who star, who was voted the second best Doctor ever, is in London playing the starring role in a disturbing play exploring violent patriarchy.
On the stage for the first time in ages, Jodie Whittaker plays the Duchess in a modern adaptation of a play written more than four hundred years ago. Welcome to Zinnie Harris’ acclaimed version of The Duchess of Malfi. Harris also directs.
The last time Whittaker appeared on stage was in a 2012 production of Antigone at the National Theatre alongside fellow Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston. She is apparently thrilled to lead this powerful production that wowed Edinburgh audiences in 2019.
With stage credits including The Storm, Enemies, A Gaggle of Saints, Awake and Sing! And Antigone under her belt, you’re assured of a top class performance from the star.
Inspired by a true story dating back to the 1500s
The plot transports the original story to modern times. Based on John Webster's 1613 play of the same name, this disturbing look at the power of the patriarchy explores the life of the fictional Duchess, whose sufferings are actually based on a true story dating back to the 1500s.
It goes like this. When the recently widowed Duchess defies her family to marry a man she loves from a class lower than hers, her greedy brothers are furious. They decide to punish her cruelly to remind her who’s boss. Expect a vivid, complicated and captivating contemporary production whose subject is still an issue centuries later.
