The Fabulist description

We’re thrilled to announce a gorgeous new musical comedy. This is the world premiere of a major new musical comedy billed as a joyous and fast-paced feast, perfect for everyone who loves a colourful West End spectacle. Lovely old music and a brand new book seal the deal.

Destination Italy...

Your destination is Italy where, in 1929, a film is being made. When the talented illusionist and outlawed heretic Julian goes on the run from Mussolini and the Catholic church, he finds sanctuary on set. Screenwriter Clarice soon falls for his magical skills and easygoing charm. But it’s hard to trust a man whose life is an illusion. And what if he’s caught?

With a fresh new book and lyrics by James Farwell, this musical is based on Giovanni Paisiello’s almost-forgotten opera, The Imaginary Astrologer, written specially for Catherine the Great. He was one of the most famous composers at the time thanks to his light, airy operas and sublime melodies. This is just one of more than ninety operas and operettas he wrote, along with masses of stand-alone songs and instrumentals.

The creators

Lovely old music and a brand new libretto make the show unique, a joyful celebration of romance and self-discovery. Directed by John Walton, the creative team also includes the Musical Director and Orchestrator Bobby Goulder, Set and Costume Designer David Shields, Lighting Designer Fridthjofur Thorsteinsson, Sound Designer Andrew Johnson and the Casting Director Debbie O’Brien. It’s produced by Steven Levy for Charing Cross Theatre Productions.
