Life of Pi description
About The Life of Pi
Whether or not you've seen the movie, Lolita Chakrabarti's stage adaptation of The Life of Pi has seen astonishingly good reviews as well as a critically and commercially successful world premiere. Now this extraordinary stage version of Life of Pi is transferring to the West End. One of the biggest mysteries about the plot is this: why is the tiger called Richard Parker? This is a great story. Richard Parker is a character in a book by Poe. He's the boy who was eaten by cannibals following a shipwreck in 1884. He was also the man who drowned when the good ship Francis Spaight went down in 1846. The author Yann Martel spotted the coincidence, couldn't get all the unfortunate Richard Parkers out of his head, and used it in the book.
What's the story of The Life of Pi?
The plot is based on incredible Man Booker-winning novel about a cargo ship that sinks in the Pacific Ocean leaving a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, a 16 year-old boy and a Bengal tiger in a lifeboat, bobbing on the ocean. The boy is called Pi, the tiger is called Richard Parker, and they learn to co-exist in the tiny boat as it gets battered by the waves day after day, night after night. The way all this action and drama is portrayed on stage will leave you breathless with admiration and excitement. This is a thrill per minute, and it also happens to have a totally unexpected ending, a genius of an ending you won't forget.
Who is on the The Life of Pi creative team?
The original book is by Yann Martel. The play is directed by Max Webster. The designs are from Tim Hatley plus Finn Caldwell of Gyre and Gimble, in collaboration with puppet designer Nick Barnes. The Lighting is from Tim Lutkin, composition by Andrew Mackay, and the sound by Carolyn Downing. Video content comes from Andrzej Goulding and the original casting is by Polly Jerrold. Finn Caldwell plays the tiger.
