The Rocky Horror Show description
Fishnets and feathers, glamour and glitz. This cult show comes with a plot loved by millions and tunes you can’t resist. It’s the Rocky Horror Show, back in the capital on a new UK tour, and there’s entertainment royalty on stage in the shape of Jason Donovan.
The ingredients are pretty special. Add them together and you get musical theatre perfection. The music, lyrics and book are by Richard O'Brien. Over the past 50 years it has been produced in 20 languages and 30 countries, and seen by more than 30 million people, many of whom dressed up to see it. This show is a legend in its own lifetime, set to hang onto its record as the longest continuous run of a contemporary musical... anywhere, ever. And with Jason Donovan, entertainment royalty and an experienced West End star, in the starring role it’s going to be unforgettable.
So what can you expect?
This is a hilarious tribute to 1950s-60s B-movie style sci-fi and horror telling the tale of a young newly engaged couple who get stuck in a storm and find themselves at the house of a crazed transvestite scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter.
Produced in places as diverse as Norway Germany, Spain, Argentina and Japan, on European tours and US tours, it ranked number 8 in BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the Nation's Number One Essential Musicals. The show featured on a Royal Mail stamp in 2011. There’s even an NFT collection to mark the show’s 50th birthday. It will probably be running in another fifty years’ time.
This musical has toured the UK frequently since its 1990–91 West End revival at the Piccadilly Theatre. It has been produced by Richard O'Brien's and by Howard Panter's Rocky Horror Company, and past productions have been littered with celebs. Daniel Abineri, Peter Blake, Tim McInnerny, Anthony Head, Robin Cousins, Jason Donovan and Jonathan Wilkes have all played the wicked Dr Frank-N-Furter.
