The Score description

The awe-inspiring Brian Cox (Succession) stars in The Score, a remarkable new piece of drama from Oliver Cotton (Diamond Geezer), directed by Trevor Nunn and on stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in early 2025. The critics say it is magnificent. Don’t miss this extraordinary new play.

Roll back time to spring 1747, in Potsdam, Prussia, where the Age of Enlightenment is about to kick off and change the world forever. When the composer Johann Sebastian Bach reluctantly visits the court of King Frederick II, Europe’s most feared and ambitious leader, the two men clash. Bach despises war, the king adores it. Bach is deeply religious, the king doesn’t believe in gods.

Despite their differences, the king remains in awe of Bach’s talent. But he has arranged a musical conundrum he hopes will confuse the composer and entertain his courtiers, and neither man could have predicted the explosive events that follow.

Legendary cast, fantastic creative team

Brian Cox most recently wowed TV audiences in HBO’s multi-award-winning series Succession. He stars as Johann Sebastian Bach. Cox’s career spans more than 60 years of award-winning work, a star in the sky of some of the world’s best-respected venues and theatre companies as well as a household name in Hollywood and on TV. Twice the winner of the Olivier for Best Actor, his role in Succession attracted a Golden Globe award and Emmy nominations.

His real-life wife, Nicole Ansari-Cox, joins him on stage for this epic new drama, another well-loved face on the UK stage and screen as well as over the Atlantic. She has delighted audiences in the TV series Deadwood, in Paso de Ovejas, A Woman in Winter, Oblivion Nebraska, Hard Four and Tom Stoppard’s Rock’n’Roll, both at the Royal Court Theatre and on Broadway.

The creative team consists of writer Oliver Cotton and Director Trevor Nunn with Robert Jones as the Set and Costume Designer and Johanna Town the Lighting Designer. Sophie Cotton is the Composer and Sound Designer, Cordelia Monsey the Associate Director, and the casting comes from Ginny Schiller CDG.
