The Snowman description

About The Snowman

In 1978 the delightful Raymond Briggs, already a well-loved illustrator and writer, created a brand new new children's book. The Snowman went on to become a very British legend and the 1982 TV animated version has thrilled millions of people across the world ever since with its charming plot, lovely music and touching story. This stage adaptation has graced the London theatre scene during the festive season for two decades and counting, thanks to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre's superb live stage adaptation. The story is told through movement and images, not words, and the special effects are remarkable.

What's the story of The Snowman?

It has snowed heavily overnight and when young James wakes up, the whole world is white and magical. He builds a huge snowman and when he sneaks downstairs at midnight the snowman comes to life. James shows his new friend around the house, then they go for a motorbike ride through the woods. The snowman takes James by the hand and they soar into the sky, flying over the South Downs and Brighton's Palace Pier, then far, far north to Norway. They meet Father Christmas and eventually fly home before sunrise. The next day his snowman friend has melted, but James finds the scarf Santa gave him, so he knows his dream was real.

Who is on The Snowman creative team?

Raymond Briggs himself, of course, wrote the story and illustrated it. The music and lyrics come from Howard Blake, including the magical song Walking in the Air, made famous by the Welsh singer Aled Jones. The design is by Ruari Murchison and the lighting from Tim Mitchell.
