To Kill A Mockingbird description

About To Kill a Mockingbird

Bartlett Sher’s award-winning production is transferring to the West End from Broadway. Did you read the book? Did you see the magical black and white movie? Whether you did or didn't, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is well worth seeing. The Broadway version won an astonishing nine Tony nominations, a well-deserved accolade for a fresh new production of the story loved by millions. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize and remains controversial thanks to the story of racism in the USA's deep south that it weaves. In 2017 the novel came seventh in the American Library Association’s top ten most challenged and banned books because of its honesty, revelations of violence, bad language and racism. A play that has also attracted a Drama Desk Award plus an Outer Critics Circle Award, it is as powerful and difficult to digest as ever... in a good way!

What's the story of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird?

The plot for this marvellous tale was inspired by the author's own childhood in Alabama. It follows the life and times of the lawyer Atticus Finch, his six year old daughter Scout, her friend Dill, her brother Jem and the mysterious Boo Radley. Atticus is a symbol of honesty and compassion in racist times, a stand-out character in a distressingly racist town, and his treatment of an African American falsely accused of raping a white girl is tough to experience but remarkable in its fairness and kindness. What an amazing story.

Who is starring in To Kill a Mockingbird?

Rhys Ifans stars, the hugely popular Welsh actor, producer and musician. He is loved for playing Spike in Notting Hill, Jed Parry in Enduring Love, Eyeball Paul in Kevin & Perry Go Large and more, a very funny man who pulls top class serious roles out of the hat as required.

Who is on the Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird creative team?

Adam Guettel wrote the original score and the author is Aaron Sorkin. Miriam Buether is the Designer and the Sound Designer is Scott Lehrer. Ann Roth is the Costume Designer and Bartlett Sher the Director. Jennifer Tipton does Lighting Design.

What are people saying about Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird?

  • The Telegraph - “Aaron Sorkin’s vigorous version is gripping theatre.”
  • Rolling Stone - “Atticus is a good man besieged by doubts, fears and flashes of righteous anger.”
  • Chicago Tribune - “A game-changing To Kill a Mockingbird”
